The Halogen Family

The halogen family is group 17 and it has 5 elements. They are:
  • Fluorine, F, Gas
  • Chlorine, Cl, Gas
  • Bromine, Br, Liquid
  • Iodine, I, Solid
  • Astatine, At, Solid

Halogen means "salt forming." All of the halogens are very reactive. The uncombined elements are dangerous to humans.

Chemical Properties:
  1. All very reactive
  2. Burns Skin (Bromine)
  3. Carbon and Flourine combined make non-stick coating on cookware.

Physical Properties:

Fluorine: a pale yellow
Chlorine: a yellow greenish
Bromine: a brown redish
Iodine: a dark violet
Astatine: none

Common Uses:

Bromine: In medicines, fumigants, dyes, and water purification pounds.
Fluorine: air conditioning, refridgeration, and toothpaste.
Astatine: none
Iodine: plants and animals need trace amounts of iodine for normal growth, and also used for it's antibacterial qualities.
Chlorine: many cleaning products as well for disinfecting pool and drinking water.

Intresting Facts:
  • flourine is the most electromagative and the most reactive chemical element.
  • Hydrogen and flourine react with explosive violence.
  • Flourine is good for very explosive reactions.
  • Iodines name originates from the greek word Iodes meaning Violet.
